Boozy England fans set to down over 20m pints cheering on Lionesses at Euro 2022

Boozy England fans will sink over 20million pints cheering on the Lionesses at Euro 2022 this summer, a new report claims – we'll drink to that!

England are among the favourites to win the tournament, which is being held on home soil for the first time since 2005. Sarina Wiegman's side will be cheered on by over 71,000 fans at Old Trafford for their opening game against Austria on Wednesday – with millions more expected to watch at home and in pubs around the country.

The tournament is also predicted to give a welcome boost to England's ailing economy. A VoucherCodes survey reveals that thirsty fans will splash £198.7 million on drinks alone during the 25-day extravaganza, gulping down an estimated 20.8million pints in total.

England legend Sue Smith is an ambassador for VoucherCodes.co.uk and spoke about the economic boost the tournament will bring. She said: "As so many Brits prepare to enjoy the tournament, it’s a great boost for both women’s football and the economy to see that fans are expected to spend £1.2 billion across the duration of the championship.

"Understandably and in part due to the cost-of-living crisis, many will choose to host BBQs and parties from home as a more cost-effective way to celebrate during the tournament."

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport about the findings, Smith said: "I think one of the things that stood out to me was the 20.8million pints that are going to be drunk throughout the tournament!

"We always use that as a measure, don’t we? It shows how far the game has progressed. If the VoucherCodes report had been done in 2005, I don’t think we’d be seeing those figures. It just shows the growth of the game."

Anita Naik, Saving’s Expert at VoucherCodes.co.uk, commented: "While it’s encouraging to see such strong spending figures, this Euros is taking place in the midst of a cost of living crisis in the UK, at a time many of us are beginning to feel the real impact of rising costs.

"If, like millions, you’re opting to cheer your team on at home on at home and want to stock up on reasonably priced food and drink, our advice is to check for the best supermarket and delivery service discounts.

"All of the codes on our site are all hand-tested to make sure you always get the deal you’re promised. It’s also worth visiting your local supermarket about an hour before closing time as this is when they’re most likely to reduce items!"
