Liverpool have reached a deal with Benfica to sign Darwin Nunez for €75million (around £64m), with the fee potentially rising to an eye-watering €100m (around £85.3m) with add-ons.

After heavy speculation, the deal is now finally reaching its conclusion and the Uruguayan is set to undergo his medical on Monday before penning a six-year deal. Nunez will become Liverpool's record signing, amassing the £75m that was spent on Virgil van Dijk once the full package is paid.

Benfica announced that they had reached an agreement with Liverpool in the early hours of Monday morning, detailing the full financial breakdown of the move. Liverpool are yet to announce the move themselves, but a formal acknowledgement is expected imminently from the Reds.

"In the early morning hours of this Monday (0:44 am), Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informed the Securities Market Commission (CMVM) that it had reached an agreement with Liverpool FC for the sale of all rights to the player Darwin Nunez, for the amount of €75m," read an official Benfica statement.

"To the CMVM, Benfica's SAD also informed that the agreement provides for the payment of a variable remuneration, so the global amount of the sale could reach the amount of €100m. It is further informed that the aforementioned agreement is dependent on the signing of the player's sports employment contract with Liverpool FC."

The transfer is now expected to be completed and announced on Monday, with Nunez becoming the latest member of Liverpool's exciting front line. Nunez will become the second addition from the Portuguese league within the space of six months, after Luis Diaz arrived from rivals Porto.

The 22-year-old will be the first Uruguayan player to join Liverpool since Luis Suarez in 2011, and if Nunez can make a similar impact then the potential £85.3m fee will be a bargain. And it's certainly possible, as Nunez has just completed a prolific season at Benfica, scoring 34 goals and providing four assists in 41 appearances.

Nunez starred against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final, and has been linked with a Premier League move ever since. But Liverpool have fought off competition from Manchester United to sign the Uruguayan, and with Sadio Mane nearing a move away, it was needed on Merseyside.

Mane has just one year left on his contract and it's believed he would like to move to Bayern Munich. The German giants have already had two transfer bids rejected, with Liverpool reportedly holding out for a fee close to £40m. Should they be successful, they'll raise almost half of the funds needed for the Nunez transfer, in a shrewd piece of business.
