Atletico’s Gimenez sent off for horror kung-fu kick ‘worse than Xhaka’s red’

Atletico Madrid's Jose Maria Gimenez was given a red card for a 'kung-fu kick' on Thursday evening as Atleti faced off with Athletic Bilbao.

Atleti were chasing the game, having seen the Super Cup semi-final spun on its head in the second half.

Gimenez had attempted to hook the ball out of the air, with Atleti on the attack, but instead, the Uruguayan caught Iñigo Martínez in the head.

It was the final action of the game as Gimenez was given his marching order by the official.

And some fans have claimed that Granit Xhaka's red card is 'nothing' in comparison to the Atleti man.

"Granit Xhaka was nothing in comparison, [Gimenez's challenge] the most ruthless tackle of the season," one fan tweeted.

Another added: "From Xhaka to Gimenez what a night."

"Everyone on Twitter is complaining about Xhaka, Arsenal, but they have not seen this situation? Absolutely crazy acted, stretched legs, up with the sole straight in the temple," a third tweeted.

A fourth tweeted: "I thought Xhaka would win the idiot of the week award tonight, but Gimenez definitely outranks him."

Meanwhile, Xhaka was sent off in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Xhaka brought down Diogo Jota as the last man while attempting to bring down Andy Robertson's long ball.

However, despite spending the majority of the game with ten men, Arsenal were able to hold onto a 0-0 draw.

Mikel Arteta's side now have it all to play for when they welcome Liverpool to the Emirates later this month.
