Arsenal want Runar Alex Runarsson transfer sealed in time to make West Ham squad

Arsenal are reportedly hopeful they can secure the signing of Dijon goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson in time for him to make the squad for this weekend.

The Gunners have targeted the shot-stopper having sold Emiliano Martinez to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta subsequently needs to bring in support for No.1 Bernd Leno, and attention has turned to Runarsson.

The Icelandic goalkeeper is believed to be close to signing a five-year contract at the Emirates with hopes that a deal can be done before Arsenal take on West Ham this weekend.

Runarsson must be registered by midday on Friday to be part of the Gunners squad for Saturday’s game.

Sky Sports report that Arsenal hope to have a deal completed “as soon as possible" to allow that to happen.

Martinez joined Aston Villa having impressed in Leno’s absence towards the end of last season.

Arteta opted for the fit-again Leno as the season started last weekend with Arsenal winning 3-0 at Fulham.

And Martinez had planned to leave the Gunners having been at the club for a decade.

“He [Dean Smith] explained why he wants me here, the process that he wants from the club and also the playing style, and that’s why I decided to come here.
