AC Milan ‘prioritise Olivier Giroud signing’ as veteran striker nears the end of his Chelsea contract but face competition from Serie A rivals

  • Reports in Italy claim AC Milan have made Olivier Giroud a top summer target
  • The Frenchman will be available following the conclusion of his Chelsea deal
  • Milan recently offered a one-year extension to veteran star Zlatan Ibrahimovic
  • Giroud, 34, has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea

Italian giants AC Milan are reportedly prioritising the signing of Olivier Giroud this summer, as his Chelsea contract comes to an end.

The veteran French targetman has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, and Milan are hopeful of adding him to the ranks according to Gazetto dello Sport.

Giroud, who will turn 35 in September, has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season and has long been linked with a move to the Italian top flight.

Inter Milan, Lazio and Roma have each also been linked with the Frenchman, who has now spent almost a decade in the Premier League with Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

While Giroud has only hit the back of the net four times in the Premier League this season, he has crucially bagged six goals in the Champions League as Chelsea have made their way to the final in Porto.

Giroud has fallen down the Chelsea pecking order behind Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner

Zlatan Ibrahimovic recently signed an extension in Milan and could be partnered by Giroud

The Frenchman has found himself on the fringes following the breakthrough of Tammy Abraham and the summer signing of Timo Werner, though the latter has still struggled to make the adjustment to English football.

On Tuesday Giroud was named as part of France’s 26-man squad for the upcoming European championships, after receiving a vote of confidence from manager Didier Deschamps.

Deschamps is known to be an admirer of Giroud and played him seven times during the 2018 Russia World Cup, in which he failed to get on the score-sheet.

In recent weeks Milan have taken further steps to bolster their attacking ranks, after handing a one-year extension to 39-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic after his 15 goals and two assists in 19 Serie A matches this term.
