New Cat Cameron suffers hamstring injury

Boom Geelong recruit Jeremy Cameron has suffered a hamstring injury, but it’s hoped the setback won’t delay his Cats debut.

The former GWS star pulled up sore last week, but club sources say the forward was back running on Saturday, while teammates enjoyed a break for the long weekend.

Cameron has had hamstring issues before.

He missed the remainder of the 2017 finals series when he injured his left hamstring tendon in a qualifying final loss to Adelaide.

Prior to that, Cameron’s hamstring issues were on his opposite leg.

It’s hoped Cameron will return to full training shortly, although the Cats weren’t able to comment when contacted by The Age.

Meanwhile, Cameron’s superstar teammate Patrick Dangerfield is expected to train this week after returning from Adelaide, where he saw renowned groin rehab specialist Steve Saunders.

Saunders, who previously worked at North Melbourne under Brad Scott, finished a two-year stint at the Crows at the end of last year.

Saunders is well known in the sports medicine field for his injury prevention program known as KangaTech, which has been used in the AFL as well as overseas, including in the English Premier League and the NBA.

Dangerfield has barely been able to run during the pre-season, but club sources indicated he’s likely to train in some capacity this week.

The Brownlow medallist struggled with groin pain for the majority of 2020, although he still managed to play 21 games from which he polled 15 Brownlow votes.

Cameron, who turns 28 early in the season, is coming off a poor year in which he kicked just 24 goals, the lowest tally of his career.

But the Cats recruit, who will wear Gary Ablett snr’s famous No.5 guernsey, declared his intentions for 2021 late last year.

“I want to have my best season I’ve ever had,” Cameron told reporters in December.

“I don’t want to set low goals. I want to set a really high standard and train really hard over the summer and I’ve already started that probably about six weeks ago.”
