Williams will honour Captain Sir Tom Moore’s legacy by aiming to complete 100 pitstops over the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend, with help from the team at the factory, as part of the Captain Tom Moore 100 Challenge.

At 99 years old, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Captain Moore became a household name as he aimed to raise £1,000 for NHS charities by completing 100 laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine in Bedfordshire in April, 2020 during the first national lockdown.

He ended up raising an astounding £38.9million, and with it won the hearts of the British public. He was knighted by the Queen for his fundraising efforts and passed away earlier this year at the age of 100.

To mark his 101st birthday, on April 30, the Captain Tom Foundation has invited people to take on a challenge centred around the number 100 – and Williams will be aiming to complete 100 pitstops over the three days of the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend.

Williams has decided to raise money for the team’s official charity: the Spinal Injuries Association.

“Captain Sir Tom Moore inspired millions around the world, with his simple message of hope, “Tomorrow will be a good day” and brought comfort and joy to so many around the world during the pandemic,” said Williams CEO Jost Capito.

“It has been a challenging time for everyone and still is, and we want to take this opportunity to do something in his memory, whilst also raising money for a very worthy cause. As a team, we take great pride in our pitstops, so this is a great challenge for the team both trackside and at the factory to come together to accomplish, and we’re looking forward to it.

Lewis Hamilton led the tributes after Captain Moore died, and called the Second World War veteran “a true hero” and an “inspiration to the entire country”.

Hamilton added: “He was an inspiration to the entire country and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to be able to tell him how in awe of him I was.

“Captain Sir Tom was a true hero and we will never forget the incredible man who brought out the best of us at such a difficult time. RIP Captain Sir Tom.”

Many in the paddock shared his sentiments, with McLaren’s Lando Norris saying: “With sadness one of the coolest and most inspiring characters has passed away.

“A man who showed the world what you can do no matter the age or difficulty. It was a pleasure to share some good laughs with you, I’ll remember them.”
