Russell’s Mercedes showing ‘confirmed’ that Hamilton isn’t the best F1 driver

Max Verstappen is a better driver than Lewis Hamilton and that was confirmed by George Russell’s performance for Mercedes at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

That is the view of Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner, who believes that his man has to get far more out of his car than the seven-time world champion.

The future of Hamilton is currently uncertain after his contract ended last year, but he is still expected to reach an agreement before the 2021 season.

However, there has been some debate over potential wage demands, with the impressive display of Russell handing the manufacturer a dilemma.

Horner told RacingNews365 this week: “Verstappen is the best, and George Russell's performance at Mercedes confirmed that for me.

“Max and Lewis stand out but, while we should definitely not be blind to what Hamilton has achieved, he does have a good package at his disposal. Max has to get more out of his car.

“At Mercedes, a Williams driver can qualify himself directly on the front row and Russell almost won the race.

“However, if at Red Bull someone has to get into Verstappen's car, for example if Max had corona, then nobody will reach his level. The others have a hard time compared to Max’s performance.”

That comes after Dutch professional racing driver Christijan Albers suggested that Hamilton is no longer able to ask for a pay rise considering Russell’s performance.

“George Russell then literally and figuratively shattered Hamilton’s plan,” he told De Telegraaf before questioning a potential wage increase for Hamilton.

“What is the last 10 million for him?” he said.

“The world is on fire and you have to take into account that his own business model no longer works.”

Last week Hamilton said on Instagram of his plans: “Lots of work ongoing in the background.

“Many moving parts but just checking in to let you know I’m doing good.

“I’m healthy and mentally strong right now in my bubble.”
