Relaxed Lewis Hamilton steals Lando Norris’ Union Jack hat ahead of British GP

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Lewis Hamilton and Lando Nando will share the third row when the British Grand Prix gets underway this afternoon.

On the biggest day of the season for both British drivers, the pair were looking incredibly relaxed as they lapped up the support of the 142,000 fans at Silverstone ahead of the big race.

They even shared in a bit of tomfoolery during the traditional drivers’ parade, which precedes every race. Norris, wearing a Union Jack bucket hat, had pulled over to be interviewed by Sky Sports’ Natalie Pinkham when Hamilton, whose driver had also stopped, burst into picture and swiped his headwear and plonked it on top of his own bright yellow baseball cap.

The pair then shared a warm embrace as the home fans roared their approval. Speaking before his interruption, Norris, who will start sixth, said: “You genuinely look up to the crowd every single lap. The more they’re cheering me on, the more they’re jumping up and down, the faster I’ll dry.”

With rain threatening, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will start on pole with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen beside him on the front row of the grid. The other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is third with the Red Bull of Sergio Perez in fourth.

Hamilton and Norris will make up the third row with the other British hope, George Russell of Mercedes, in eighth. Speaking after qualifying, Hamilton said he was hopeful of fighting for a podium.

"There was definitely an improvement for us, and we seemed to have closed up a little," he said. "But I think in the dry we wouldn’t have had a chance to get into the top three but in the rain, we had a chance today.

"Our race pace was a little bit better yesterday [in practice] than our single lap pace. From fifth, it will be tough but I’m going to try and work my way forward."
