Piquets daughter dates Verstappen as ex-racer slammed for racial Hamilton slur

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Max Verstappen is set to face some awkward questions from the media ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix after Nelson Piquet’s alleged racist remarks about Lewis Hamilton.

Piquet has been widely condemned for allegedly using a racial term to describe Hamilton during an interview in Brazil. The comments related to Hamilton’s clash with Verstappen at last year’s British Grand Prix and have only just come to light.

Verstappen knows Piquet extremely well and could become his son-in-law as he has been in a relationship with the 69-year-old’s daughter, Kelly, since 2020. Nine years Verstappen’s senior, Kelly has a child from a previous relationship with a man her partner will also know well, former Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat. The Russian had two spells in F1 between 2014-2016 and 2019-2020.

Kelly is a Brazilian model, influencer and blogger. She is active on social media, regularly posting pictures of herself with Verstappen on Instagram. She celebrated her boyfriend's first world title win at the end of the 2021 season at the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the caption: “World f***** champion. Just unforgettable.”

Many still believe that title was stolen from Hamilton after the usual rules regarding the safety car were not applied, allowing Verstappen, on much fresher tyres, to overtake the Mercedes on the last lap.

At the time of writing, Kelly had not commented on her father’s alleged language in relation to Hamilton.

Max and Kelly have plenty in common as both have F1 racer dads. Piquet senior won the world title in 1981 and 1983 with Brabham and in 1987 with Williams. The latter triumph came after a bitter two-year feud with British hero Nigel Mansell.

Max’s dad, Jos, had a more modest career, racing in 107 races and scoring two podiums, although he was briefly teammate to Michael Schumacher at Benetton. Verstappen is perhaps best remembered for his car catching fire during a fuel stop at the 1994 German Grand Prix. He escaped the inferno with minor burns.
