F1 fans predict fireworks between Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin boss Stroll

Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin will see two of F1’s hardest taskmasters working in unison.

The two-time world champion has stunned the motorsport world by penning a ‘multi-year deal’ with the ambitious Silverstone-based squad. As a result, he will leave Alpine at the end of the season after a two-year stint with the Renault-owned outfit.

Alonso is renowned for demanding a lot from the teams he drives for which has led to fractious relations with some of his former employers. Lawrence Stroll, the ambitious billionaire owner of Aston Martin, has a similar no-nonsense reputation and has grand plans for the team on and off the track.

The pair know each other well, with Alonso saying: “I have known Lawrence and Lance for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula One.

“I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

“No one in Formula One today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.”

Stroll added: “I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me.

“I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organisation to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.

“It seemed natural therefore to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together.”

However, relationships can change when people work together and many F1 fans are predicting fireworks between the pair.

One fan tweeted: “Alonso to Aston Martin gives me bad vibes. It's a great move on track (doubt it), but for me the personalities of Alonso and Lawrence Stroll are a bad, bad combination. The vibes ain't vibing and he hasn't even joined the team yet.”

A second added: “Lawrence Stroll vs Fernando Alonso is something I'd pay to watch” while another said: “Lawrence Stroll ain’t ready for the slander from Alonso if the car doesn’t perform.”

Another fan believes the producers of the hit Netflix series, Drive to Survive, will be licking their lips, saying: “Netflix are in the clouds because the Lawrence Stroll vs Fernando Alonso storyline is going to be spicy.”

Alonso’s arrival will put extra pressure on Aston Martin to perform, with one fan asking: “I’m wondering what the F1 media is going say if Aston fails Alonso too. Will they finally acknowledge that the team is doomed until Lawrence Stroll is there? Or will they say that Sebastian wrecked the team and he's the reason?”
