Reports: No supplemental discipline for Evgeni Malkin on T.J. Oshie head shot
Evgeni Malkin briefly knocked T.J. Oshie out of Wednesday night’s game between the Penguins and Capitals with an elbow to the head, but the star forward will not receive further supplemental discipline from the league’s Department of Player Safety, according to several reports.
Greg Wyshynski of ESPN and Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston both had the same report Thursday morning that Malkin would not have a hearing for the match penalty, which occurred 3:27 into the third period of the Caps 2-1 victory.
According to both, the league likely believed Malkin was bracing himself for contact with the oncoming Oshie after the Penguins forward passed the puck to his left. There is no question Malkin’s elbow made contact with Oshie’s head, but there seemed plenty of gray area if there was any intent or not.
Oshie — who earlier in the game received stitches near his eye after being clipped by a high stick — went down in a heap after the Malkin hit. He eventually went to the dressing room, successfully passed concussion protocol and returned to the game. Oshie then capped his adventurous night by scoring the game-winning goal with 1:14 remaining in regulation.
