Mitch Marner injury update: Toronto Maple Leafs forward leaves game after twisting ankle

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner left Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers after injuring his right ankle.

The 22-year-old fell backward just after a faceoff at center ice in the second period and awkwardly twisted the ankle. He initially tried to skate off the ice but appeared unable to put weight on his right leg. He eventually dragged himself to the bench on his hands and knees.

It wasn’t immediately apparent whether Marner’s problem was injury- or equipment-related. He briefly returned to the bench during a TV timeout to test his ankle. The Leafs, however, announced just before the end of the second period that Marner would not return to the game. He played seven minutes, 36 seconds through the first two frames.

Marner has scored 18 points (four goals, team-high 14 assists) in 18 games this season.
