Baker Mayfield undergoes shoulder surgery, begins road to recovery and ‘my true self’

The road to recovery for Baker Mayfield begins.

The Browns quarterback took to social media in a sling on Wednesday to announce the successful surgery performed to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.

“Surgery went great,” Mayfield said with his left shoulder in a sling. “It was a complete success. Had a great medical team. They took good care of me.”

The surgery was performed in California by Dr. Orr Limpisvasti, who is the orthopedic surgeon for the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks.

How long with Baker Mayfield be out?

The likely time period for Mayfield’s recovery is four to six months. He will start physical therapy on his shoulder next week and is expected to be able to throw a ball by April. Mayfield is expected to be cleared by training camp.

When did Mayfield get injured?

Mayfield suffered the shoulder injury in Week 2, but played through it for the rest of the season, appearing in 14 of the Browns’ 17 games. Mayfield threw for 3,010 yards and 17 TDs against 13 INTs and completed 60.5% of his passes this season. In a tumultuous season, which included reported internal strife between Mayfield and head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Browns QB finished the season with the fourth lowest touchdown passes, third lowest passing yards, and tied for the fourth most interceptions thrown.

But with surgery out of the way, Mayfeild says he’s ready to “get back to my true self.”

Drama, Drama, Drama

This past year hasn’t been very easy,” Mayfield said Wednesday. “A lot of stuff has gone down. It wasn’t easy on me or my family.”

In a year where Mayfield needed to prove he was the QB of the future for the Browns, the drama centered around him (and his wife) is well documented. Following a 13-10 win over the lowly Detroit Lions, Baker’s wife Emily took to Instagram, writing, “”No one better say anything bad about @bakermayfield after this game. I don’t think I have seen toughness like this in a while. Maybe the rest of our team should take the hint and get tougher.”  Baker was 15 of 29 for 176 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions in that game with a QBR of 8.6.

Things got more prickly when Mayfield expressed his displeasure with head coach Kevin Stefanski’s game plan after the Browns loss the Steelers.

Despite the reports of tension between QB and head coach, however, things reached a head on when Mayfield disputed a report claiming he would seek a trade.

Road to Recovery

Despite the drama, Mayfield, who often plays with a chip on his shoulder, appears focused on using this year as motivation in his road to recovery.

“It’s not going to be an easy one,” he said, “But it’s going to be one that I’m going to remember and it’s going to be a special one.

“This is not the end of my story. It’s just going to be one of those little things that I’ll look back and remember that it’s one of those challenges and adversities that I’m going to take advantage of.”

Mayfield, who turns 27 in April, is set to make $18 million next season in the final year of his contract.
