Nuggets interested in Facundo Campazzo, Real Madrid PG, source says

The Nuggets may be going international, again.

Denver has significant interest in signing Argentinian PG Facundo Campazzo of Real Madrid, a league source told The Denver Post.

Free agency officially opens at 4 p.m. MST Friday and players can sign contracts beginning Sunday at 10 a.m.

Campazzo, 29, is a decorated international player and among the best passing point guards in Europe. Despite his size (5-foot-11), Campazzo’s vision and feel for the game are elite. The Nuggets have been linked to Campazzo for more than a year.

If he landed in Denver, it remains to be seen what role he’d have. The Nuggets are well-stocked in their backcourt, with starters Jamal Murray and Gary Harris, along with reserves Monte Morris and P.J. Dozier.

Wednesday’s draft yielded combo guard R.J. Hampton at No. 24 after the Nuggets traded back into the first round with New Orleans. And then following the draft, the Nuggets agreed to terms with Markus Howard, the NCAA’s scoring leader last season at Marquette, on a two-way contract, a league source said.

Any move at point guard could have a significant impact on Morris, who wants to sign an extension in Denver. If he doesn’t, he’d be an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Adding Campazzo could serve as insurance.
