The Warriors (7-1) have opened the defence of their NBA title in superlative fashion, losing just one of their eight games to date.

Kevin Durant produced a 25-point fourth quarter explosion to turn a tight game against the Knicks into a 28-point blowout. Stephen Curry dropped 52 points on the Washington Wizards in just three quarters as the Warriors romped to a big win in the capital.

In their last game, the Warriors racked up 92 points by half-time on the way to a 149-124 thrashing of the Chicago Bulls.

The key battle – Klay Thompson v Jrue Holiday. Warriors’ Thompson is in some form – last time out, he broke the record for the most three-pointers in a game (14) previously held by his fellow Splash Brother, Steph Curry. Pelicans’ Holiday will have a job on his hands to outshine either Thompson or Curry.

Last time out

Numbers game – 26. The minutes Thompson needed to accrue 52 points against the Chicago Bulls, with 14 three-pointers. He finished 14 from 24 efforts.

One to watch (Warriors) – Thompson and Curry inevitably take the headlines but Kevin Durant has more than played his part in the NBA champions’ 7-1 start.

One to watch (Pelicans) – Anthony Davis. No surprise here, but the stats make for grim reading for New Orleans fans. Their star player Davis took them to a 4-0 start, but they have lost their most recent two games in his absence. Davis is nursing an elbow complaint and the Pelicans’ hopes may rest on his availability.
