NBA draft 2020: Five things to know about international prospect Theo Maledon

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Theo Maledon, one of the top international prospects in the 2020 NBA draft, with the 34th overall pick on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old guard who hails from Rouen, France has shown significant potential having played the last three seasons (2017-2020) in France's top league, Pro A, with ASVEL.

Maledon, at 6-foot-5, 180 pounds became the youngest to earn an MVP award in the French Cup finals and was named Pro A Best Young Player in 2019. His size and  wingspan have helped him become a consistent rebounder and a versatile guard at multiple positions.

Breakout star in France's top league

Maledon made his first division  debut at just 16 years old with ASVEL in 2017. In the 2018-19 season, won a league title and became the youngest All-Star in league history.

In Maledon's third season (2019-20) he averaged 7.3 points and 2.7 assists in 46 games across all competitions.

Tony Parker is a mentor

The six-time NBA All-Star owns ASVL andhas taken a special interest in Maledon.

“I can’t tell you just one piece of advice, because there are so many,” Maledon said of Parker's influence.

Potential scoring and defending abilities

Maledon's scoring has been inconsistent  but that doesn't mean he can't become elite. With his length and quickness, Maledon has the potential to grow into a stronger finisher.

A basketball family

Maledon's parents Claude and Sylvie were both accomplished basketball players in France. His sister, Lena also played college basketball at Southern Arkansas.
