Dana White has revealed that Conor McGregor suffers ‘chronic arthritis’ to his ankles, with the UFC president confirming that the promotion knew of the issue before his UFC 264 defeat to Dustin Poirier.

McGregor, 33, vowed to avenge his Fight Island defeat to The Diamond in Sin City. However, the Irishman was stretchered out of the Octagon after breaking his leg in a freak injury in the dying seconds of the first round.

The Notorious later took to Instagram to claim that White and the UFC knew of ‘stress fractures’ heading into the Las Vegas showdown.

The Irishman broke his leg in horror fashion during his defeat to Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas

‘I was injured going into the fight,’ McGregor said. ‘People were asking me when was the leg break – at what point did the leg break? Ask Dana White. Ask the UFC. Ask Dr. Davidson, the head doctor of the UFC.

‘They knew. My leg – I had stress fractures in my leg going into that cage. There was debate about pulling the thing out because I was sparring without shin pads, and I was kicking.’

White did not directly respond to the stress fractures claim, but revealed that McGregor has long suffered arthritis in his ankles, adding that the UFC approved of the Irishman wearing tape for UFC 264.

‘(McGregor) has had ankle issues for (the) last couple of years,’ White said via MMA Junkie.

White did not address that remark but said the UFC approved of tape for his ankles

‘He had asked if he could tape his ankles coming into this fight and he got clearance to do it from the Nevada State Athletic Commission and then he opted not to tape them. I don’t know why. He has chronic arthritis in his ankles.’

McGregor’s defeat to Poirier is his third in four UFC fights and leaves him staring into the abyss. White expects the Irishman to be sidelined for at least one year, and hinted that McGregor could call it a day on his illustrious career.

‘It’s going to take him a year to recover from this one before he can come back, so I don’t know,’ White added.

‘We’ll see. The fight game is a tough game and the kid has cemented a massive legacy for himself and made a lot of money. We’ll see how the rest of his career plays out.’

The UFC supremo also cast doubt on McGregor’s plans given that he is sidelined for a year
