Jedrzejczyk reveals she is 'coming back to fight the No 1 contender'

Joanna Jedrzejczyk reveals she is ‘coming back to fight the No 1 contender’ after long lay-off as ex-strawweight champion eyes another epic battle with Zhang Weili

  • Joanna Jedrzejczyk has not fought since losing to Zhang Weili in March 2020
  • Former UFC strawweight champion has taken plenty of time off to recuperate
  • She is targeting a scrap with the Chinese star, who is the No 1 contender

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is planning a return to action after her lengthy lay-off following defeat by Zhang Weili way back in March 2020.

The Polish star has taken plenty of time off to recover and mentally recharge after suffering her fourth loss in six fights.

That Fight of the Year against Weili clearly took a toll but the 34-year-old is ready to have another crack at the fellow former champion, who is now No 1 contender.

She told Kanal Sportowy: ‘Everyone thinks I’m not in the UFC anymore. I am, I just dropped out of the ranking, because I haven’t fought for a dozen or so months.

‘But I’m coming back and fighting [the No. 1 contender]. It will probably be Zhang Weili.

‘I thought it might be Carla Esparza, but [it’s] confirmed that she is the next to fight the championship.

‘Somewhere there is [Maria] Rodriguez, who also fights Yan [Xiaonan] in March, and [then it] becomes Zhang Weili. I don’t see any other fight. Just going for the belt.

Zhang became the champion but has since been dethroned by Rose Namajunas

Joanna sustained some nasty swelling to her head in what was the Fight of the Year

‘Dana [White] made me an offer to fight for the championship, but I would have to wait until November-December and I don’t want to wait. I want to fight.’

Namajunas defeated Weili twice to claim the title and is expected to face Esparza, who she lost to in the Ultimate Fighter finale back in 2014.

An impressive victory for Jedrzejczyk against Weili would put her in with a great chance of another title shot.
