Horse racing fans amazed as horse with 16 straight wins is beat at 1-100 odds

Horse racing phenomenon Golden Sixty went into Sunday's Group 1 Stewards’ Cup at Sha Tin with a 16 race winning streak.

And the six-year-old was 1-100 to claim his 17th straight win in a row during the mile contest.

A 17th win would have matched the exploits of Silent Witness, who racked up the same amount of straight victories nearly 20 years ago.

However, there was a shock on the cards as Golden Sixty only managed second with old rival Waikuku taking the win by three parts of a length.

It was Golden Sixty's second defeat of its career in just 22 races, and ended its winning streak over 900 days.

One fan, after seeing the result, tweeted: "WOW!! Was not expecting that."

"These equine athletes aren’t machines. Just like human athletes, they’re capable of off days," a second added.

A third tweeted: "Absolutely shocker in Hong Kong! Golden Sixty is beaten!"

"A tragedy Shakespeare would be proud of. Well ridden @zpurton though," a fourth, poetically, tweeted.

Trainer Francis Lui said: “The horse is okay – he appears to have pulled up well. It was just the draw.

"The way the race was run, he needed to be closer but, from the inside, it wasn’t possible today."

While British jockey Harry Bentley, who finished last, added: "I definitely thought that Golden Sixty would win the race but the slow pace didn’t help him coming from so far back.

"He then didn’t get the clearest of runs on the bend."
