Siddle slams England’s Smith claims

Steve Harmison, declaring Steve Smith will forever be known as a cheat is the pot calling the kettle black.

That’s the message from Peter Siddle following the English great’s comments regarding Smith’s suspension for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal.

Harmison, known best for his first ball wide in the 2006/07 Ashes in Australia, said it didn’t matter what Smith accomplished, he would never be forgiven.

Smith has been in incredible form, notching up 671 runs at an average of 134.20 including three centuries as Australia retained the Ashes in the UK for the first time since 2018.

“When you’re known as a cheat — and he is, I’m not going to sugarcoat it, the three guys cheated — that’s on your CV,” Harmison told talkSPORT

“You’re marked and you take it to your grave.

“Whatever Steve Smith does, he’ll always be remembered for what happened in South Africa.”

Speaking on SEN SA Breakfast, Siddle called out Harmison for hypocrisy.

“It’s more of a laugh than anything because we know some stories about what has gone on in the past,” he said.

“A couple of his teammates from back then put out books since the ‘05 Ashes and talked about sugar-coating the cricket ball to get reverse swing in that series.

“That’s the irony in all that, that he actually used the word sugar-coat, when two of his teammates have talked about mints and different things to put on the ball. It actually comes back on him.

“We’ll have the last laugh about that, and I think Steve Smith has definitely put those to rest and he’s just done his talking with the bat.”
