England will aim to build a winning lead over Sri Lanka as they move closer to a first away Test victory in two years in Galle.
Having posted 342 in their first innings, with Ben Foakes scoring a stunning century on debut, England then bowled out their hosts for just 203 to put themselves in a strong position.
The tourists closed the second day on 38 without loss, opening up a lead of 177 runs with all 10 wickets in tact.
They will aim to bat for all of the third day and establish a commanding lead as they chase a first win on tour since they beat Bangladesh in 2016.
It will be then down to their bowlers – especially their spinners – to complete the job with omens good after Moeen Ali took four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings and Adil Rashid and Jack Leach two apiece.
James Anderson and Sam Curran also picked up a wicket as the dismissals were spread amongst England’s bowling attack.
