Putting money on Fury to beat AJ ‘like betting on Floyd Mayweather’

Boxing champion Shakur Stevenson is so confident Tyson Fury would beat Anthony Joshua that he compared it to 'betting on Floyd Mayweather'. The Gypsy King solidified his status as one of boxing’s greatest when he knocked out Dillian Whyte in the sixth round at Wembley Stadium last month.

AJ meanwhile, is awaiting confirmation of his championship rematch with Oleksandr Usyk and, should he regain the heavyweight titles, a mammoth unification would be an ideal future match for the pair. But with Fury adamant he has now retired, will the allure of being a unified and undisputed champion bring him back for one more fight?

Should it take place, Stevenson, 24, who unified the super-featherweight division last weekend following an impressive victory over Oscar Valdez, does not believe AJ has much chance of beating the Mancunian. "Betting on Tyson Fury is like betting on Floyd Mayweather,” the American toldDAZN .

"It's for sure… I'm telling you, Tyson Fury, if he fights any of them guys, it's like Floyd vs Andre Berto." Mayweather faced Berto in September 2015 with the welterweight championship on the line.

The undefeated boxing icon dominated the fight, landing an impressive 56% [232/410] punches thrown, and 67% of power punches compared to Berto's underwhelming number of 16% punches landed and 22% of power punches thrown. Mayweather won the fight via unanimous decision, with the judges scoring heavily in his favour: 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111.

The victory extended the legend’s undefeated record to 49-0, and he fought once more against Connor McGregor in 2017, taking his record to 50-0 before retiring. Meanwhile, Fury's promoter Frank Warren recently claimed a super-fight between Fury and AJ would not be difficult to make.

He toldtalkSPORT: “If that happened, we’d have to work out what the percentages would be. “I would obviously be arguing that Tyson gets more. But whatever it is settled at, that’s how it would be split. It would work out that there would be a certain guarantee. How these things move on is that there’s a pot and it would be determined by how much money we get into the pot with pay-per-views and things like that – then how it’s split. So there’s a guarantee against the split. But it could be a £200million fight."

Following his latest win, Fury’s wife Paris suggested a unification fight is all that may bring him back for another fight. “I would like him to come home now, he has nothing more to prove,” she told BT Sport Box Office. If he had anything left to do I would say ‘yeah Tyson you do it’, he has nothing to prove, unless he really wants to box on.

“If he’s just doing it for money or fame, he doesn’t need that. We’re very blessed and lucky to not need any more money, I’m happy with what we are and what we’ve got. I know in my heart I think the only reason that Tyson would come back is for a unification fight."
