MMA great Mark Hunt stuns world by knocking out Sonny Bill Williams at age of 48

MMA great Mark Hunt has stunned the sporting world, after knocking out boxing star Sonny Bill Williams at 48-years-old. Hunt got into the ring with Williams, despite the rugby star being 11 years younger than him.

Despite this, this did not stop the 48-year-old from causing one of boxing's biggest shocks after he landed a killer blow on his fellow New Zealander to secure a technical knockout. Heading into the fight, Williams was no doubt tipped as the heavy favourite.

Things did not go to plan for the former rugby union star though, as midway through the fourth round his 48-year-old opponent went on the attack.

Hunt landed a number of blows on Williams, and it proved all too much for the 37-year-old, who fell to his knees in the ring before the referee ended the fight to give victory to the MMA fighter. Williams first started his professional boxing career in 2009, in order to aid his progression on the rugby pitch.

Since retiring from rugby union last year though, the 37-year-old has placed his sole focus into his boxing career. Defeat on Saturday was Williams' first as a professional boxer, having won the nine previous fights in the ring.

After a number of u-turns Hunt officially called time on his MMA career back in 2018, and after this weekend's victory he has also confirmed his career in any combat sport was now over. Post-fight he said: "I'm smiling not because of the win, but I'm smiling because this is the last time I walked into a ring of combat of any sorts.

"My first thought after was 's*** I want to do that again!', but no [I won't be back in the ring again]." Humble in defeat, Williams paid tribute to the great Williams, revealing it was an 'honour' to share the ring with the 48-year-old.

He commented: "I would like to say it was an honour to share the ring with Mark Hunt tonight, the Super Samoan. I tried my best but it wasn't good enough. Not too much positives to take from that, but to share the ring with a legend like Mark, it was special.

"Also to see a lot of Polynesian brothers get a chance on the card was special. Whatever happens happens."
