Hughie Fury determined to become world champion – but won’t fight cousin Tyson

Hughie Fury is keen on another shot at a world title in the future despite tasting defeat in his first bid for a belt four years ago.

The younger cousin of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, the pair came into the sport hoping to be the "new Klitschkos", following in the footsteps of brothers Vitali and Wladimir who for a time dominated the world heavyweight scene.

Tyson has since beaten Wladimir Klitschko to win all the belts except for the WBC, been banned from the sport amid struggles with addiction and his mental health, made a triumphant return and regained a heavyweight title, which he successfully defended against Deontay Wilder last weekend.

But Hughie has struggled to hit the heights his cousin has, losing his WBO title shot in September 2017 when he was outworked by champion Joseph Parker in a bout which went the distance.

He has lost since to Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Povetkin, but feels he is now a much better fighter and, at the age of 27, he feels ready to push for another chance of winning a title.

"Before, it was a boy against a man," he told inews. "You could see with my shape and everything.

"Now it’s a different story. I took all the learning from those fights and it’s brought me on leaps and bounds."

But he is against the idea of a fight one day against his cousin, who could conceivably be the unified champion by the time Hughie is ready for another title shot.

Could Hughie Fury one day be a world heavyweight champion? Let us know in the comments section.

Tyson Fury holds the WBC belt, and seems set to face the winner of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua for a chance to hold every belt in the heavyweight division.

"I often get asked the question," Hughie said when probed on whether he could see an all-Fury affair in the ring happen. "But no, it’s not a circus act. I wouldn’t fight my cousin."

Before Hughie can even think about a future title shot, he must focus on the task at hand – a fight against one of Tyson's former opponents Christian Hammer in Newcastle on Saturday night.

Hammer is the Englishman's first opponent in 10 months, and Fury is just relieved to be back in professional action for the first time since beating Mariusz Wach.

Hughie said: "All the motivation for me is just getting in the ring and doing my job. He’s a tough opponent. We can’t underestimate him and he’s coming to win, so I’m expecting a great fight.

"I have been dodged a bit, so hopefully now, I’m with the right platform and getting fights – and coming back starting with Hammer it’s a good start already."
