Tyson Fury’s next outing could be his chance to unify the heavyweight division with victory over Oleksandr Usyk – but he would have to pay some price for the privilege. Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua would need to be compensated, and they could set some hefty demands to step aside.

Fury’s next opponent is supposed to be Whyte, who is the WBC’s mandatory challenger.

That arrangement came about because of Joshua’s defeat to Usyk, and their rematch clause which dictates that AJ gets first crack at winning his belts back.

So Usyk is contractually obliged to fight the man from Watford again, while Fury has been ordered to take part in a big all-British bout in the meantime.

The only way that arrangement can be changed is if both challengers step aside of their own accord.

It’s possible both Joshua and Whyte could be convinced to wait a little longer for their title shots – but it would cost Fury and Usyk a pretty penny.

According to the Sun, AJ is reportedly set to be offered £15m in exchange for his patience, while Whyte will be tempted with a £5m lump sum to give up his right to a crack at the WBC belt.

It means £20m would have to be shelled out for Fury and Usyk to have the chance to become undisputed champion – and that’s assuming those sums are accepted by their would-be opponents.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes both Joshua and Whyte, has not ruled out the possibility of both his fighters accepting such an arrangement – if the price is right.

“There are people who would like to see Fury v Usyk for the undisputed title, and would be willing to pay a lot of money for it,” he said.

“If there is a lot of money in the pot, and a plan put in place to make all the fighters happy, then there is a chance it can happen.

“The problem is time. Conversations started a month ago – but they are very complex.”

Fury’s American promoter Bob Arum echoed that last message, and revealed it is being made messier by other groups trying to get involved to grab themselves a piece of the pie.

“It is total chaos,” he flatly told TalkSPORT.

“What’s happening is just promises coming out of the Middle East about doing a unified fight with Usyk and Fury, and is Dillian Whyte gonna step aside.

“And people that have absolutely no contractual ties – like Frank Warren’s Queensberry and our Top Rank do – are getting involved.

“It’s a typical terrible kind of situation, but hopefully it’ll get sorted out and probably it will get sorted out with a purse bid on Friday.”
