Mike Krzyzewski apologizes to Duke student-reporter whose question drew the coach’s ire

Things are OK with Coach K.

Jake Piazza, a student-reporter for Duke’s school newspaper, The Chronicle, made waves for being the target of Mike Krzyzewski’s displeasure following a 70-65 loss to Louisville on Saturday.

Piazza, an economics major, asked Krzyzewski, “What the next steps forward is for the team as you move towards a new week of basketball,” to which Krzyzewski replied with a bit of disdain:

“Why don’t we just evaluate this game, I’m not really into what our next step forward is right now,” Krzyzewski said.

Piazza revealed that Coach K reached out to him via phone call over the weekend and apologized for going a bit over-the-top in his response to the question.

While no specifics were shared about the conversation between two, Pizza penned a column on his experiences leading up to the game and shared a small detail on Krzyzewski’s apology.

“My phone rang and Coach K was on the other end of the line,” Piazza wrote. “Our call was short, but the sincerity in his apology was genuine. And in the end, I appreciated the call.”

The internet was abuzz with criticism aimed at Krzyzewski for his postgame answer, with many placing onus on his lack of tact while speaking to an inexperienced student-reporter.

The Blue Devils’ latest loss added to a less-than-stellar start to the 2020-21 college basketball season. They remain unranked at 5-5 on the season, with a 3-3 record in conference.
