Fans mock sculpture of Manchester United legend George Best

‘Did they use the same guy that did the Ronaldo statue?’: Fans mock sculpture of George Best and claim it looks nothing like Manchester United legend as it’s unveiled at Windsor Park

  • Fans have slammed a statue of George Best that was unveiled on Wednesday

  • Best made over 350 appearances and scored more than 100 goals for United
  • People took to social media to slam the artwork though after it was unveiled

There have been plenty of examples where turning a footballer into a statue hasn’t quite worked out and a sculpture of George Best has drawn awful reviews after being unveiled on Wednesday.

A statue of the Manchester United legend has been erected outside Windsor Park in Belfast and was presented by Pat Jennings and Gerry Armstrong on what would have been Best’s 73rd birthday.

Best, who made over 350 appearances and scored more than 100 goals for the Red Devils, died in 2005 at the age of 59 and his homeland have now attempted to pay tribute to him.

However, the statue attracted outrage on social media with some fans claiming it looked nothing like Best.

There were even some comparisons to a Hollywood actor. @silvergellar quipped: ‘Think you’ve put one up of Kevin Bacon rather than George Best!’.

It even drew comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo’s statue in Madeira.

@ARathcoole tweeted: ‘Did they use the same guy who done the Ronaldo statue?’.

The Portuguese star was also on the receiving end of a poor statue when a disastrous sculpture was placed at the airport re-named after him.

The bust, designed by sculptor Emanuel Santos, almost broke the internet – with many pointing out that it looked more like Niall Quinn than the great man himself.

Argentina icon Diego Maradona also had a questionable monument erected in his name, with the face more closely resembling Susan Boyle according to some commentators.

Perhaps the most bizarre football statue of all though was the one of Michael Jackson displayed outside of Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

It was placed there by former owner Mohamed Al Fayed, who was close to the singer before he passed away, but now resides in the National Football Museum in Manchester.
