Phillies bring back ex-manager Charlie Manuel as hitting coach

The Phillies are bringing back former manager Charlie Manuel to help with the team’s struggles in the second half of the season.

Philadelphia announced Tuesday that Manuel will take over as the hitting coach after it fired John Mallee from the position.

Since the All-Star Break, the Phillies have been sluggish and have won just three of their last 10 games. In the second half of the season, Philadelphia ranks last in the National League in batting average (.240), RBIs (109) and extra-base hits (82).

Mallee, who has been the Phillies’ hitting coach since the beginning of the 2018 season, might not be the only staff member the team is letting go. NBC Sports reported other changes are being “discussed.”
